And Just E-mail me if you would like the FREE sample avalible for "The Dark Gift" Newsletter. It comes out every three months. Subscritions start in August. So you still have time to get a Subscrition. Just E-mail (Mistressofthenight1@yahoo.com)

Frank Langella’s complete domination over his prey with his self-assurance and style, paired with Laurence Olivier as Van Helsing yielded probably the best Dracula production ever.  @The names of the two female characters were changed in this production (as were the Nosferatu entries).  Mina is killed off quickly, and Lucy remains the Count’s paramour.  Kate Nelligan and Isabelle Adjani (Nosferatu the Vampyre) are the best of the Dracula prima divas, regardless of the name change.  Both were Lucie, not Mina.

VAMPIRES IN MYTH AND HISTORY

by Beverley Richardson
Vampire myths go back thousands of years and occur in almost every culture around the world. Their variety is almost endless; from red eyed monsters with green or pink hair in China to the Greek Lamia which has the upper body of a woman and the lower body of a winged serpent; from vampire foxes in Japan to a head with trailing entrails known as the Penanggalang in Malaysia.

However, the vampires we are familiar with today, although mutated by fiction and film, are largely based on Eastern European myths. The vampire myths of Europe originated in the far East, and were transported from places like China, Tibet and India with the trade caravans along the silk route to the Mediterranean. Here they spread out along the Black Sea coast to Greece, the Balkans and of course the Carpathian mountains, including Hungary and Transylvania.

Our modern concept of the vampire still retains threads, such as blood drinking, return from death, preying on humans at night, etc in common with the Eastern European myths. However many things we are familiar with; the wearing of evening clothes, capes with tall collars, turning into bats, etc are much more recent inventions.

On the other hand, many features of the old myths such as the placing of millet or poppy seeds at the gravesite in order to keep the vampire occupied all night counting seeds rather than preying on relatives, have all but disappeared from modern fiction and film.

Even among the Eastern European countries there is a large variety of vampires.

November: Frank Langella

Frank Langella (as Dracula) - I'm sure I'll get some argument out of this number one but do your worst. Dracula has always been the ultimate seducer. He is walking, talking, biting, sex. And no one to date has portrayed him quite like Frank Langella in 1979. I used to watch this film and fantasize about...well that's none of your business. Let's just say his Dracula has always made my heart race and my pulse pound and I would expose a... vein to him anytime. His love scene bathed in red light is like pure porn. And I hear he gives damn good hickeys.

Well there you have it and now I have to go cool off. But first, I have three honorable mentions this week. It was very difficult to narrow this down because I find so many different qualities sexy in a man. But just because I couldn’t fit them in up there, it doesn’t mean I don’t want to include them. Honorable Mentions:

Vincent Price (for just being him) - a cool, tall drink of water with a voice on the spooky/sexy side.

Steve McQueen (as Steve Andrews) - He’s freakin Steve McQueen. I don’t need another reason.
